Bubba the Love Sponge got Doug Goodstein on the phone yesterday to get his opinion about Bubba's video guy neglecting to film part of a bit. Anyway, Bubba asked Doug if he could comment on the Artie Lange situation. Doug said several times that he shouldn't comment, but he did say that he doesn't think it looks good, especially after two outbursts and threatening to do it again.
I get the feeling that things may already be cemented. It's kind of strange, though, that everyone is assuming Artie wants to get his job back. I know it's supposedly the best gig ever, but Artie has been miserable there for a long time.

That actually surprises me.
In a regular corporate environment, yeah...definitely I could see that being said. But, Artie is by far the most popular character on the show and undoubtedly his presence is what generates so many subscriptions.
The 'outbursts' and 'threats' were made IN the studio. That should hold an element of artistic freedom to it, regardless of whether there were real feelings involved or not, it was a BIT. Anything that goes live on-air is a bit.
Is Doug just trying to add to the drama and suspense or is Artie really out the door?
I gotta say, I'd lose a lot of interest in the show if he's gone. Howard and Robin went 'Hollywood' a long time ago and don't hold my interest, Fred doesn't get much airtime and Benjy is a complete hack who's best work comes when his mic is shut off.
Perhaps Sirius is looking forward to the XM merger and doesn't feel the Stern show is the commodity it once was....?

Corporate is as corporate does...
Once lawyers get involved, all feelings, emotions, and relationships get set aside, and they start worrying about lawsuits and settlements. I see this shit every single day. Artie is a popular figure on the show, but on satellite no one cares about advertisers or ratings. It's just one of 100 channels you pay for in a package. As far as I've been able to tell, no one even tracks how many people are listening to the show, at least not in any scientific way. Even if Artie gets booted, and they loose 10-20% of the shows listeners because of it, it won't affect there bottom line one cent. This is a different biz model from terrestrial. They'll listen to something else on Sirius. The truth is they won't loose any significant number of listeners at all, and a lot of people will tune in to see what happens next. Actually, a huge change like this, considering the msm coverage this whole thing has gotten, may actually give the show a bump if anything...

I was hoping this was all just a big joke but I guess not.

Well...don't give up yet. I'm a pretty jaded person at this point, so I'm automatically assuming a lot of negative things. I like Artie and don't necessarily want him to leave, but I have to be honest and say I think it would be better for him if he left, got healthy and started working on the future of his own career, instead of supporting Howard's. I think the show is killing him. I really think he needs to come up with a TV gig of his own. I'd miss him, but I think he could be even funnier doing something he really applies himself to. I know that will bum a lot of people out, but the show must go on.
Don't freak out yet though. I do still think it's possible he could stay, because in the few very shady quotes I have heard and read, it does seem like people are intentionally keeping things suspenseful and whatnot, so it could all end up just another bit, even if it started as something else.
