Howard Stern has taken credit for the death of Philadelphia radio station WYSP-FM as a rock/talk station. CBS will put 610 WIP on 94.1 FM starting September 7th.

The move comes as Howard Eskin’s 25-year run ends on WIP amid a ratings beating from Mike Missanelli, who is on another simulcast station, 97.5 FM The Phanatic.

Stern told his listeners on Thursday that WYSP couldn’t survive after his radio show moved away from free radio to satellite radio.

Stern leaked the news on his radio show today about an hour before the official announcement.

WYSP ended up the highest-rated FM station in Philadelphia when Stern took his New York-based show to Philadelphia as his first syndicated partner.

Stern soon dislodged WMMR’s John DeBella in a bitter public ratings war that were only available in 1986, with Stern staying of WYSP until 2006.

Subsequently, the station has tumbled in the ratings.

WIP’s announcement of Eskin’s departure had triggered rumors that WIP would control WYSP, as Missinelli and 97.5 The Phanatic were credited with using FM being a key tool to dislodge Eskin.

One of the most prominent current personality on WYSP is Danny Bonaduce.
