Did Artie Really Want Dana that Much?

Artie Lange was talking about his ex Dana Sironi today saying that she's the one that got away. It seems that she called him after his meltdown to see if he was ok, and after Howard asked him if he still has feelings for her, he said that he does.

Artie had 1001 chances to get back with Dana. I can't think of any other woman who would have taken him back so many times after the heroin, the not-going-to-the-cousin's wedding, not getting therapy, not losing weight, and everything else. All he had to do was try to make an honest effort to get some help for his problems, and they'd still be together. I really don't think he wanted her that badly. How could he?

I don't think it's so much that he doesn't want her...it's that he's an addict and has no self-control. He isn't in a 'place' where he can change yet. He's going to have to hit rock bottom, if he's lucky to do so before he dies.

An addict is a strange creature...he/she can be successful in so many aspects of life, but totally pathetic in others. Artie's a sick person...I don't think people appreciate or accept that fact...he IS a sick person. He has a disease, a mental illness.

As much as he loves Dana, he isn't ready to do what he has to do to keep her and make her happy. I think he realizes this, and I think she does too.

Any illness that goes untreated will just get worse. The probability of Artie becoming 'well' without going to rehab and working a 12 step program is just as likely as a cancer sufferer becoming cancer free after refusing chemo or radiation treatment.

This is how and why many intelligent, talented and successful people who are addicts wind up dying lonely and broke.
